Velotric Discover 1: $400 off this value City Cruiser electric bike [Video]
The Bicycle Discovery 1 is a great value electric city cruiser with surprising quality considering the mid-range entry price. There’s so much to love about this bike, but the looks are definitely the positive first impression. The Discover 1 has a wonderful construction that combines utility and aesthetics.
The Discover 1 looks really good in photos, but it’s even better in person.
The quality on the Bicycle Discovery 1 really shows, with a very striking frame that’s a refreshing take on the electric cruiser platform. The rear triangle meets the rear rack, and the bottom bracket is met with a bold frame joint that stands tall and becomes part of the design. At the front of the bike sits the steerer tube, which is wide and suited to the mechanical features, but also holds the internal wiring for better fit and finish.

Velotric Electric Power 1
The Discover 1 is powered by a 500W rear hub drive motor with an output of 65Nm of instant torque. Combined with the large capacity 48v and 14.4ah battery, the bike has an indicated range of up to 48 miles with level 1 pedal assist. Even at full throttle I would expect to see around 30 miles of autonomy without pedalling. Using the pedal assist feature, the Discover 1 could last much longer than most people would like on a bicycle seat.
But the Discover 1 also has a secret power. The high capacity battery is built with either Samsung or LG 21700 cells (the same cell size form factor used by Tesla), which allows for greater burst power output. These cells can handle a higher output discharge compared to the common size (the 18650). Additionally, these cells are designed for long life and balanced power applications, making them a perfect choice for city cruising.
Discover 1 is not left out
As a Class 2 e-bike, the Discover 1 is equipped with a throttle and a top speed of 20 mph. This makes it a legal bike in most municipalities, normally in towns where the bike is intended for exploring.
As a city champion, the Discover 1 has integrated front and rear lights, and the tail light also has a high beam for brake light functionality. Actual stopping power comes from a set of 180mm mechanical disc brakes, which also house an engine cut-off feature.
Maintaining strength and functionality, the frame is an advanced reinforced aluminum design with an angular pattern running throughout the bike. The rear triangle features a clean cut and fantastic lines, a real stunner in many ways. It’s hard to find a bike of this quality and unique design at this price. It is very easy to assemble and disassemble, but also maintains stable steering on the road. This relaxed riding position takes the weight off the rider and allows the bike to take the brunt of road imperfections.
More than the eye can discern
The Discover 1 has hidden features that add value behind the scenes. First, the UL2849 certification. This classification ensures that the electronics of this bike have been tested for resistance to fire and electric shock for all drivetrain and charging systems.
The internal routing and sleek design of the bike itself are more notable. Bike wiring and wires tuck into the bike frame, giving a clean look from front to back. The electrical cables come together at the controller, which is housed inside the chassis, preventing damage or risk to the electrical system.
Velotric gets to work
On the business side, the Discover 1 is equipped with a rear rack to carry additional loads of various sizes, both trunk bags and side panniers. It also comes equipped with full front and rear fender protection from weather and road debris. The Shimano 7-speed drivetrain runs entirely alongside the motor, still putting some skin in the game, albeit a bit much easier.
In addition to riding with style and utility, the Discover 1 features a host of comfort points. The ergonomic grips have a nice texture on all sides, the handlebars meet you, relieving your back, and the saddle is wide and plush to reduce fatigue. A surprising advantage is the front shock on the Discovery, which makes this bike much more suitable for urban exploration than hardtail bikes at a cheaper cost.
