JERSEY CITY — An unlicensed driver has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run accident that seriously injured an 18-year-old who was riding an electric bicycle, Hudson County authorities said.
Marvin Lara, 39, of Jersey City, turned himself in to Hudson County Detectives Thursday.
Jersey City police responded Jan. 8 at 8:30 p.m. in the Summit Avenue and Jewett Avenue area to reports of a hit-and-run accident involving an electric bicycle.
The driver did not stop and continued west on Jewett Avenue, witnesses told police.
The 17-year-old e-bike rider and his 18-year-old male passenger were both taken to Jersey City Medical Center, with the 18-year-old sustaining a serious lower-body injury.
An investigation by the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit found the young men were struck by a Toyota RAV4 driven by Lara.
Lara was charged with knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle collision resulting in grievous bodily harm, endangering an injured victim and causing grievous bodily harm in an unlicensed collision.
He was also ticketed for leaving the scene of an accident, driving without a license and failing to report a traffic accident.
Lara is expected to make her first court appearance on February 28.
