Tanzania: Mtwara plans to triple cashew harvest

MTWARA plans to almost triple cashew production to 700,000 tonnes in four years.

The region plans to increase cashew production dovetailed well with Wednesday’s winning of an all-new tractor by the Mtwara-Masasi Cooperative Union (MAMCU) of the National Bank of Commerce (NBC) Lottery.

Mtwara Regional Administrative Secretary (RAS) Mr. Abdallah Malela said prices are coming at the right time as the region implements its strategies to increase cashew production from the current 280,000 tonnes by 2025 .

“The region issued a basic resolution that starting with the next agricultural season, each major cooperative union should have a 1,500-acre farm in order to meet production targets for cashews and other strategic crops. .

“With these awards, it’s obvious you have the backing of NBC and you should be backing the bank as well,” he said.

NBC presented various prizes including bicycles, motorcycles and a tractor to the winners of the sixth “Vuna Zaidi na NBC Shambani” campaign run by the lender.

Mr Malela also insisted that farmers in the region should ensure that they cultivate a savings crop in banks and maintain financial discipline, including reinvesting in farm equipment for modern farming practices, and thus improve their economic well-being.

Mtwara District Commissioner, Mr. Dastan Kyobya, pledged to provide 1,500 acres of land to MAMCU for agricultural purposes, in support of the lender’s good intentions of helping farmers.

“As NBC has started to allocate farm equipment to you, including a tractor, we, the government, will provide 1,500 acres for the cultivation of crops,” Kyobya said while congratulating MAMCU.

Speaking at the earlier event on NBC Chief Financial Officer Mr Waziri Barnabas said that since the start of the campaign a total of 138 winners have received various awards including bicycles, motorcycles, pesticides, sprayers and many other prizes such as khangas, satchels and notebooks, valued at 200m / -.

NBC Small and Medium Business Director Mr. Raymond Urassa said that through the raffle, the bank handed out 26 different types of prizes, including a tractor, seven motorcycles, nine bicycles and pesticide sprayers. to individual farmers, AMCOs and regional cooperative unions in Mtwara and Lindy.

MAMCU Acting Director General Ms. Biadia Matipa said the tractor had proven to be of great help to the union.

“The tractor prize came at the right time as we have already started implementing the resolution to cultivate 1,500 acres of cashews and other crops,” she said.
