“They might have to scan it for an engine,” read a tweet.

“It’s (sic) a box of treats…clearly it’s a muscle massager for those tired muscles,” read another tweet.

And a commenter suggested the very practical nature of one of the prizes given to the winner of the time trial of the opening stage.

“Is this the new bottom bracket tool with 1/2″ socket and 24mm socket wrench for ISIS, Shimano 4-sided and Octalink bottom brackets???”

After winning the opening time trial of the Bloeizone Fryslân Tour 2022, Ellen van Dijk (Trek-Segafredo Women) climbed to the top step of the podium and, among other prizes, received a box containing a headband, Kama Sutra playing cards, and sex toys from EasyToys, one of the event’s sponsors.

Van Dijk then took to social media to note the improved quality of awards given to women, as well as to solicit suggestions on how to use the awards.

For her victory at the Ronde van Drenthe 2015, Jolien D’Hoore received a vacuum cleaner.

This was not lost on van Dijk, who noted that “women’s cycling prices are improving”.

The adult-themed prizes were just one part of the unusual day, during the race formerly known as the Healthy Aging Tour.

Cyclists were also forced to navigate open roads congested with motor vehicles, pedestrians and recreational cyclists.

“The blindfold is obviously so you don’t see all the other bikes and vehicles in the path you were supposed to be running on,” said one. tweet commenting on lack of security in the race.

Professional riders were denied closed roads and were forced to navigate, head-on, commuter vans, pedestrians and cyclists during the course.

Women’s cycling struggles with issues related to abuse, professionalism and equal pay.

A week before the 2021 Strade Bianche it was learned that the women’s race would only pay a fraction of what the men would take home. In less than a week, a crowdsourcing campaign raised €25,578 for the winners.

Reported CyclingTips that the Tour of Flanders 2022 offers equal prize money for the women’s and men’s events, with a payment of €50,000 for each.
