The Edo State Government inaugurated the FOARE Mushroom Production Center and also announced the 2022 agricultural season in the state.
Agriculture and Food Security Commissioner Stephen Idehenre said in launching the agricultural season that Governor Godwin Obaseki had prioritized agriculture to ensure the Make Edo Great Again (MEGA) program becomes a reality.
Idehenre said the 2022 agricultural season flag would raise the bar for growth and increased productivity in the sector.
He claimed that the Mushroom Production Center would create 50 direct jobs and 200 indirect jobs.
He commended FOARE Mushroom Global Farm LLC for the initiative, stressing that it would pave the way for a better future for SME development in the state.
“Let me thank the promoter of this company for their commitment to supporting the government in creating wealth through innovative approaches like this,” he said.
According to him, the governor is revamping the state’s security architecture to keep farmers in the state safe.
Also taking the floor, Dr Kingsley Obasohan,
The President of FOARE Mushroom Farms Global LCC, California, USA, thanked the Governor for the partnership to help create jobs and create wealth for women and youth in the state.
“Some people will wonder what about mushrooms. The mushroom is not only meant to be eaten, but has pharmacological benefits.
“Most of the drugs we take are made from mushrooms. Retroviral drugs for HIV, drugs for hepatitis B and C, fertility drugs, among others, are made from fungi.
“This is why mushrooms are in great demand around the world. 75% of the mushrooms produced in the world are consumed by Europe.
“Every year, South Africa earns about N1.3 billion from mushrooms. But Nigeria accounts for less than five percent,” he said.
According to him, we are not only producers but also buyers. This means that we have the ability to purchase all the mushrooms produced in Edo. This is the uniqueness of our partnership.
Chief Amadi Osayande, a retired Comptroller of Edo Correctional Center and Vice President of AFAN in Edo, thanked the Governor for his kind gesture.
Osayande noted that the distribution of agricultural inputs and vouchers to rice farmers would increase productivity, increase yield and ensure a successful agricultural season.
Earlier in his welcoming remarks, the ministry’s permanent secretary, Peter Aikhuomobhogbe, urged farmers to leverage agricultural inputs to create wealth for themselves.
The highlight of the event was the distribution of motorbikes to extension workers, rice farmers and checks ranging from N100,000 to N300,000 to 23 rice farmers.
Additionally, during the event, 21 motorcycles were distributed to Frontline Agricultural Extension Officers while, Nine Rice Millers and Cassava stems, Mushroom spawn were also distributed to farmers.
