Riders Republic uses a structure that will be very recognizable if you’ve played any of The Crew or Forza Horizon games: you explore a beautiful open world, participate in exciting races and trick competitions, search for collectibles and unlock better gear and more challenging activities as you go – only instead of driving all-terrain vehicles, you’ll swap between a bike, wingsuit, snowboard, and pair of skis to hit the mountains. Riders Republic sticks very closely to the existing open-world racing gameplay formula we’ve seen a few times before, but having an extreme sports version of these racers isn’t a bad thing.

Whether you’re taking the air in a snowboard trick competition or flying through the air in a wingsuit race, every sport in Riders Republic is a blast to take on. Riding a bike is all about precision and managing your pedaling endurance meter, which gets more difficult depending on your terrain. Biking in the snow, for example, is a recipe for disaster that is best avoided. Using your skis or a snowboard, on the other hand, is all about controlling your speed and momentum as you glide over slicker spots. And unlike biking, skis and snowboards perform well on harder terrains like dirt and pavement. Meanwhile, the wingsuit forces you to embrace your inner daredevil and hover or soar dangerously close to hard objects at terminal speed. Mastering every knotty machine that Riders Republic offers is challenging, diverse, and guaranteed to result in some hilarious but nasty spills.

Racing is the name of the game.


The events you use them in can be just as diverse, throwing you into the mountainside with many different objectives to shake things up. Races are speed the name of the game, and they can be very tense competitions that test your reflexes and guts to the test as you hurtle down slopes, hover over gaps and dodge obstacles. Interestingly, the map takes seven real-world national parks and 45 real-world landmarks and crushes them all into one gigantic spot, where the snow-capped peak of Grand Teton can sit comfortably next to the rocky arch of the Angel. This bizarre hodgepodge of real-world locations and incredibly diverse biomes, all knitted together, isn’t just an awe-inspiring sight to see, it makes one map look like several, each with its own. notable features, colorful landscapes and very different paths to bombard.

The map is also loaded with other things to do.


Eventually, you’ll level up enough to access more difficult activities, including big events and boss events. Unfortunately, these don’t particularly live up to their name, in that they basically look like slightly longer versions of standard events. Instead of doing something crazy like the Forza Horizon showcases, Riders Republic uses these activities as a sort of skill check to confirm you’ve earned enough loot and upgraded your skills enough to move on to the next installment. of challenges. It’s good, but not as exciting as I had hoped for a game that constantly puts its exaggerated qualities in your face.

To help you succeed in some of Riders Republic’s toughest undertakings, you’ll unlock new gear as you progress, which will make your job much easier. A rocket suit with higher stats will allow you to turn easier and use your boost rocket for longer, while a better snowboard could make you faster in deep snow which would normally slow you down. Obtaining new equipment is essential to be competitive in the most controversial activities and while it is certainly possible to compete with inferior equipment, those who have grinded (literally and figuratively) for better equipment have an incredible advantage. Therefore, leveling up and acquiring new equipment becomes a high priority and an addicting part of a sandbox that already gives you dozens of reasons to keep running.

While you buy most of these upgrades with the in-game currecny, you can also spend them on cosmetics to make your character match your particular style – which in my case meant dressing up in the most ridiculous costumes I have ever had. I could find, like an elephant in a costume, a giraffe in a tuxedo or a silly looking purple unicorn. They really go all out with some of the options so that you can make your rider as ridiculous as you want, and seeing other players in all their spooky glory is definitely part of the fun.

There are also a host of exciting competitive multiplayer modes, including Free for All ranked races that test your skills against a small group of live players, arena matches that pit two teams of six against each other. as you fight for control of a skate park, and more specifically: Mass Races. The Free for All and 6v6 Arena matches are a good way to pass the time and play competitively if you get bored of racing against player ghosts, but they are also some out of the ordinary modes that I have seen in d ‘other games before. Mass racing is a whole new beast entirely.

Mass races begin with a server-wide announcement calling on all players to stop what they are doing and participate. If you answer the call, you are immersed in a long racing tournament with 64 players and plenty of XP and accolades on the line for those who manage to reach the podium. As you might expect, running against 63 other players is utter mayhem, but the kind of mayhem that works perfectly in Riders Republic, which seems to welcome it and thrive there. The absolute horror sight of dozens of people pushing each other, soaring off the edge of cliffs and crashing into obstacles at terminal speed is a sight to behold even if you find yourself putting on a tragic spectacle. . And if you really do manage to earn a podium, the payoffs and bragging rights are immense.

The only downside to these ambitious events is that, as you can imagine, sometimes technical issues mess things up. Apparently, getting 64 players together in the same event at one time is not an easy task to accomplish, as about 10% of the time I was participating in it, the main menu was crashing – even if it seemed that it improves over time. as the launch server issues resolved. Even so, crashes and wacky glitches are quite common in Riders Republic, at least on the Xbox Series X where I played. Once I stumbled across the world map and encountered an inglorious demise, and another time I crashed into a tree trunk so hard I got stuck inside with no way out . But more often than not, encountering a bug simply meant crashing into the dashboard with only an impenetrable error code to keep me company. Seeing this stuff in a big online game like this isn’t exactly surprising, especially as we approach launch, but it’s still common enough here that it can start to get frustrating.

Lauren Lackman knows she’s a good mountain biker. The 20-year-old junior from Colorado University Mesa in Grand Junction has been cycling since before she could walk. Which meant she was well prepared for whatever last month’s Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships in Durango threw at her.

But the snow?

“It was kind of a shock,” Lackman says. “I was like, wait, so early in winter?” But I was so excited when I got there and saw the snow.

The reason Lackman was excited was that she had grown up in Wausau, Wisconsin, and learned the skill of mountain biking in the snow early on.

“It’s different. It’s really slippery for one and the more you pedal on it the muddier it gets. The most important thing is choosing the tires, knowing how fast and how much power you can put into a turn and to know: okay, if I go a little too hard here, I will probably skid to rule here and then go harder when there is grass that I can hold onto.

In mud and snow, Lackman won the championship, winning the women’s individual varsity omnium and the champion’s jersey.

The following conversation has been edited for clarity and length.


Nathan Heffel: First of all, congratulations on this national title. You’re from northern Wisconsin which helped prepare for the insane conditions on race day. What was it like growing up in Wisconsin?

Lauren Lackman: Growing up with the outdoors as it is: very cold in winter, I was doing cross-training for skiing, which seemed like a good reinforcement. My father has always supported me on all my skiing, cycling, school and adventure adventures. And that really helped me get there.

Heffel: How do you train to ride a bike in the snow on a mountain bike trail?

Lackman: It’s different. It’s really slippery, for one, and the more you bite on it, the mudder it gets. It sort of goes from an ice rink to a festival, but it’s a lot of fun. The most important thing is to choose the tires knowing how fast and how much power you can put into a turn. And knowing that if I go a little too hard, I’m probably going to slip. So I’m going to have to rule here and then go harder when there’s grass I can hold onto.

Heffel: So that creates a really muddy mess.

Lackman: Yeah, yeah. It’s a lot more technical than you might think.

Heffel: Tell us about the courses themselves; are they all downhill or is it a mix of different types of mountain bikes?

Lackman: It’s a mix. Omnium, what I won was four events. The first one was the double slalom, which is a gravity event where you go side-to-side through hooks while racing for, I think, about 30 seconds. Then there was cross country, which is what I consider to be the most famous mountain bike, and that’s one of my strengths. We did two laps – it was supposed to be three, but because of the snow they cut it. Then [we did] short track, which is a mini version of cross country – also endurance. Then downhill, going down just as fast as you can for five minutes

Heffel: And make sure you don’t slip in the mud, and all that crazy stuff. These were certainly not normal conditions, right?

Lackman: No, definitely not. This is the first time that I have participated in a national championship with so much snow or mud. It was very fun. I did cyclocross, which is one of my other disciplines, which normally takes place around December, and it’s snowy and muddy. You got those tiny little skinny tires and you basically slide in the mud and you know you’re going to fall, but you go back up, you run with your bike up [and] over obstacles. So I think it prepared me a lot for this.

Heffel: Does that make it any more rewarding that you won given these conditions and how dangerous they were?

Lackman: It really is. My mom told me until my last race, “No matter what happens, you know you’re here competing and giving it your all. And that’s something a lot of people will never experience. It is something that I will remember forever.

Heffel: When you chose to come to Colorado Mesa University, you wanted to mountain bike, right? How did he prepare for races like these while being a full-time mechanical engineering student?

Lackman: It’s hard. That’s a lot of long days and a lack of sleep. But it’s so rewarding to know that I’m not just pursuing my athletic career, I’m also graduating at the same time. My coaches, my classmates and my teachers – they understand so much how difficult it is to be a student-athlete. They help me get through it all so well. There are so many opportunities, especially here at CMU, to be able to get an amazing degree, to have a great time here at school and to see how far I can go in my sport.

Heffel: For all the mountain bikers out there, can you give us the top three or four trails that you love in Western Colorado that just have to try?

Lackman: Yeah. It’s hard ; They are all really fun. But, I would say my best couple: I love Time Machine here at Lunch Loops in Grand Junction, Horsethief on the Kokopelli Trail. And then, Slick Rock in Moab. Honestly, let’s throw that one in there. It is so unique.

Heffel: I’ve also heard of the Palisade Plunge. It’s a new one, have you tried it yet?

Lackman: I haven’t had a chance to try this yet. But I can’t wait. I’ve seen a few YouTube videos and it looks pretty gnarly, honestly.

Heffel: Now that you’ve won a championship jersey, what’s the next step?

Lackman: I would like to try a few more. One of my biggest dreams is to be able to represent the United States at a world championship, so hopefully in my next years of cycling I will have the chance to represent the United States.

Armida Barelli and Father Mario Ciceri will be declared “Blessed” on April 30, 2022.

A pioneer of denominational feminism and a Catholic priest who ministered tirelessly during World War II will be beatified in April.

Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, will preside over the beatifications of Armida Barelli and Father Mario Ciceri in the cathedral of Milan, in northern Italy, on April 30, 2022.

The date was announced on the Archdiocese of Milan’s website on October 29, reported ACI Stampa, AIIC’s Italian information partner.

Born into an upper-class family in Milan in 1882, Barelli came of age at a time when Italy’s first secular feminists emerged from the women’s suffrage movement, adding to their campaigns calls for the right to divorce and more non-religious schools.

She was president of the Gioventù femminile cattolica italiana, an organization of young women, for more than three decades, helping women to form themselves in “a Eucharistic spirituality” and to recognize their “baptismal dignity” equal to that of men, according to the vice-postulator of his cause of holiness, Ernesto Preziosi.

Under the spiritual guidance of Franciscan Father Agostino Gemelli, Barelli discerned a lay vocation as a Third Order Franciscan in 1910.

Cardinal Andrea Ferrari of Milan (who was himself later declared “blessed”) asked her to help found the Catholic Women’s Chapter of Catholic Action in the city.

Barelli met Pope Benedict XV in 1918 for a private audience in which he appointed her president of the Gioventù femminile cattolica italiana.

Barelli then helped found the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan, raised funds to open an orphanage in northern China, and founded the Secular Institute of Missionaries of the Kingship of Christ with Father Gemelli.

She died in 1952 after suffering for three years from a chronic progressive disease. Barelli’s cause for canonization was opened by the Archdiocese of Milan in 1960.

On February 20 of this year, Pope Francis approved a miracle attributed to Barelli’s intercession, paving the way for his beatification.

The miracle involved the healing of Alice Maggini, who was hit by a truck while riding a bicycle in 1989 in Prato, Tuscany, after which doctors predicted severe neurological repercussions.

Maggini’s family invoked Barelli’s intercession, and Maggini was completely healed in a scientifically inexplicable manner and suffered no further consequences from the injury until her death in 2012.

Mario Ciceri was born in 1900 to poor peasants in northern Italy.

From childhood he knew he had a vocation to the priesthood. With the permission of his devout parents, he left to study at a seminary high school while still in elementary school. His accomplishments earned him scholarships, which allowed him to continue his education despite his family’s limited means.

He was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Milan at the age of 23.

As a new priest, he was in charge of the parish catechism classes and helped the Catholic Action youth group. He founded and led a schola cantorum For the young.

Father Ciceri also helped repair buildings, acting as a carpenter, mason, and electrical engineer. He used these skills to build a small reproduction of the Grotto of Lourdes.

A young man from the parish wrote that the priest had found the time to do these activities without ever neglecting his priestly ministry and that he was “still in church”.

The man said, “Yet if you go to the hospital, you can find him there anytime; if you travel the country, wherever there is a material or spiritual need, a pain to be appeased, a need for help, you will find it there. Where you are sure not to find him is his home, which is really not his home, but the home of the young.

Father Ciceri cared for and encouraged the poor, the sick, former prisoners and young soldiers who fought at the front lines during World War II.

In February 1945, while cycling home from a nearby parish, where he had helped confess, Father Ciceri was struck by a buggy and fatally injured. He died two months later, on April 4, at the age of 44, after offering his suffering for the end of World War II and the safe return of the soldiers.

Pope Francis acknowledged a miracle attributed to Ciceri’s intercession in November 2020.

The miracle involved the recovery of Raffaella Di Grigoli, a 7-year-old girl in Como, northern Italy, who had undergone a series of surgeries for intestinal problems in 1975 and was feared to be on the point of dying.

The girl’s aunt organized a novena and told Father Ciceri’s sister the fate of her niece. The sister gave the family a scarf that belonged to the priest. Raffaella’s mother took the scarf to the hospital and placed it on her daughter’s body several times.

Raffaella was released from the hospital on February 4, 1976 and gave birth to a healthy daughter in 2005.

Cornwall Ontario – One of Cornwall’s most popular bicycle shops has moved to a new location in the center of town.

Bicycle World has opened the doors of its relocated store at 24 Ninth Street East (the former Loonies and Balloonies), a 4000 square foot store with a showroom and bicycle service area as well as ample parking at a few steps from the door.

This is the third location for the company and a big step forward from its humble beginnings over 35 years ago when owner Al McGimpsey started Bicycle World at a downtown tanning salon he was co-owner with a business partner.

“We had to go through the tanning salon with bikes,” he recalls, laughing.

Mr. McGimpsey decided to go fully into the bicycle business and eventually opened a dedicated store further south on Pitt Street, building a solid customer base for over 25 years.

The move represents the next chapter for the company, and it comes at an exciting time when interest in cycling has likely never been greater. The number of people cycling along Cornwall’s Riverside Trail has skyrocketed during the pandemic and business has been booming. For example, Mr. McGimpsey received a delivery of a dozen new bikes on a recent Friday. They were all gone on Saturday.

“People are stuck at home and think they need to go out and exercise. Cycling is a great way to do that, ”said McGimpsey. “And there really is no better place to cycle than Cornwall. We have the best bike path. It is absolutely magnificent.

Although demand has led to a shortage of bikes, Mr McGimpsey said the situation is slowly improving and they are expected to receive more in the coming weeks. The Bicycle World service workshop is also well stocked and qualified bicycle mechanics are ready to assist with bicycle repairs.

In addition to bikes, McGimpsey plans to expand winter sports opportunities even further with increased sales and service of cross-country skis and snowshoes.
