But, as the saying goes, not all wandering robots are lost.

McCormack admitted he took a bit of artistic license in referring to the robot as being “lost in the woods”.

The nature reserve is surrounded by houses. McCormack suspected the robot was just taking a scenic shortcut to complete a delivery.

Since November 2020, robots belonging to the company Starship Technologies have been in Northampton, where they make grocery deliveries for the Co-op supermarket chain.

Indeed, Henry Harris-Burland, vice president of marketing for Starship, confirmed to BuzzFeed News that the robot is simply doing its job.

“We appreciate everyone’s concern about our delivery bots, but this bot isn’t lost, it’s on a delivery to a customer,” Harris-Burland said in an email. “Our robots can traverse a variety of terrains and take the safest and most efficient route possible on each of the 10,000 to 15,000 autonomous deliveries they make daily. In this case, this route proved to be a cobbled path through a wooded area in Northampton, UK.

So, perhaps in the midst of a pandemic and the endless crush of our modern existence, we were all projecting onto the robot a bit.

Maybe we were jealous or just inspired to free ourselves from our tiring jobs and get back to nature.

Maybe we just wanted live – really feel alive.

And although the robot does not live, that does not mean that we cannot learn from its example.

Because, as Starship Technologies responded to McCormack’s tweet, every day can be an adventure.

How Not to Wash Your Bike, with Peter Sagan https://digitalbicycle.org/how-not-to-wash-your-bike-with-peter-sagan/ Mon, 16 May 2022 00:38:44 +0000 https://digitalbicycle.org/how-not-to-wash-your-bike-with-peter-sagan/ The topic of bike washing is oddly controversial in cycling. The topic of bike washing is oddly controversial in cycling. Dive deep on YouTube and you’ll find a range of tips that cover everything from using the best lavender-scented organic wet wipes, to cleaning your bike with a powerful pressure washer while doing AC headbanging. / CC. And there are situations where every recommendation is correct.

A short Instagram clip recently posted by Peter Sagan shows him “lovingly” tending to his bike at a car wash. The three-time world champion wields the high-pressure wand to get the foaming detergent into every hard-to-reach nook and cranny of his Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL7. He pays particular attention to the left bottom bracket bearing, then (properly) cleans the chain on the chainrings, before blasting snot out of the often dirty spot above the front wheel (also known to bike enthusiasts under the name of low steering bearing).

Sagan’s efficient approach to cleaning a bike isn’t necessarily bad, at least not for a professional cyclist (more on that in a moment). But his short video is a healthy reminder that the way the pros do something isn’t always the best approach for the average bike owner.

Washing bikes with a pressure washer is a common sight in the dirtiest professional cycling disciplines. Go to a cyclo-cross race and you’ll see the bikes go through multiple pressure wash cycles in a single hour. Mountain bike racers are known to do the same between workouts. And they do it because there is nothing faster.

However, what you don’t see in those short Instagram videos are the hours of professional mechanics that often follow the heavy wash to get the bike set up for race day. When done by a professional mechanic, this pressure washing (done more carefully) is often quickly followed by the use of an air compressor to quickly dry the bike before surface corrosion sets in. Then the real work begins.

All bearings on the bike are often cleaned and re-greased, or even replaced. The suspension, if present, also usually gets a fresh splash of oil to ensure maximum small-bump sensitivity. All moving components are often carefully prepared for maximum performance. The wheels are regularly rotated as soon as the tires have a few cuts. And chains are usually replaced based on weeks, not mileage or measured wear.

A lightly tuned hose or pressure washer is the cleaning method of choice among professional race mechanics. And as a result, it’s rare to find a professional race mechanic without a way to dry things out quickly (pictured is an air blower connected to an air compressor).

By contrast, seasoned shop mechanics know only too well what happens to a bike that has been thoroughly pressure washed on the outside and left to rot on the inside. The rear freewheel bearings and pawl mechanism are often the first to rust, the bottom bracket starts to feel gritty, the mountain bike suspension pivot bearings seize up and start to groove the pivot bolts or add tension to the frame, while an improperly sealed headset bearing (common on many new road bikes) will soon see its grease turn to brownish rusty sludge.

At first you ride a bike that feels fresh because it looks fresh, but over time everything starts to get rougher from corrosion and/or grease loss, and if it is left, it can result in an incredibly high utility bill.

And so I go back to Sagan, a professional cyclist who gets paid to use the product he saw washing off in this video. Professional cyclists ride a whole lot and as a result they tend to wear through a lot of product. Longevity is not a critical attribute of a product used in professional cycling. As such, most teams service bikes simply to achieve efficiency and performance, and the product is scrapped and replaced to maintain it.

There’s nothing wrong with using a pressure washer to clean a bike, but it’s important to remember that most of us aren’t Peter Sagan. If we blast detergent into our bottom bracket bearings, we’ll probably have to pay for it at some point. For some riders this is a reasonable compromise for the speed and ease of washing a bike in this manner, while others should be aware that such a rapid approach to cleaning the bike must be balanced with frequency. increased detailed maintenance.

Either way, there are better ways to maneuver a pressure washer around a bike than what Sagan shows.

Quick tips for using a pressure washer correctly

If you plan on using a pressure washer, there are a few basic things to remember:

  • Use a lower pressure setting – the goal is to remove dirt, not paint.
  • Keep a good distance between the nozzle and the bike to make sure you don’t force water into any hidden parts of your steed.
  • Do not concentrate the water jet at the entry points of the bicycle bearings. For example, avoid aiming the water jet directly at the spaces above and below the headset, the bearings next to the cranks or the edges of your hubs.
  • If you have a suspension or dropper post, do not direct pressure directly into the outer wiper seals. Instead, angle the nozzle below the line of these joints.
  • If using a detergent-based pressure washer, spray it gently on the remote bike and agitate the dirt with a brush. Wash it away with water. Forcing this foaming detergent onto the bike will remove significant grease from the bike. Also be aware that some of these automotive detergents can contaminate disc brake surfaces, often resulting in noisy braking.
  • Be careful not to throw an oily chain in the direction of the rear disc brake. This too can lead to contamination of the brakes. This is something Sagan does correctly by cleaning the chain at the chainring on the non-drive side of the bike.
  • Always dry the bike as soon as possible after washing. Most professionals use an air compressor for this, but even a few dry microfiber towels, a hair dryer (on a cool setting), or even a leaf blower will do. Just be aware that, as with the pressure washer, you should definitely not direct the high pressure air directly at the edges of the bearing seals.
  • Don’t ignore the need for routine maintenance and/or servicing. No bike is completely weatherproof.

Personally, my approach to bike washing involves spray bike wash cleaner, a soft bristle brush, and setting the shower from a garden hose (much like what Park Tool recommends). The transmission gets the most attention, and for most, a moderate level of transmission cleaning is the one to aim for. Yes, it’s slower than a pressure washer, but it’s also much gentler on all the sealed parts of your bike. And again, don’t forget to dry the bike afterwards!

If you decide to skip the above and choose to emulate Sagan instead, be sure to copy the thumbs up at the end. This is a nice gesture for your mechanic who will now have to re-grease your lower steering bearing sooner than expected.

Tom Brady is as famous a celebrity as there is in the sports world. His accolades and professional accomplishments outweigh those of anyone in the NFL. Due to Brady’s legendary status as a gamer, it might seem strange to remember he’s human.

The seven-time Super Bowl champion has made an effort to make himself more accessible since joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020. That effort continued on Saturday when Brady posted a video on social media showing him training to go for a bike ride.

In the video, Brady gives a brief glimpse into a day in his life. The Buccaneers quarterback plugged in his clothes before changing up his morning routine and going for a bike ride.

Many people asked where Brady was patrolling, and an answer came quickly from Buccaneers insider Greg Auman. Auman confirmed that Brady was in the Manhattan area.

Tom Brady’s video gave us a harmless glimpse into his personality. The three-time MVP has strived to showcase his personality since leaving the New England Patriots.

Leaving Bill Belichick opened the door for Brady to speak out more openly on social media. Without that independence, it’s fair to wonder if Brady would have agreed to become Fox’s lead announcer after his retirement.

How will Tom Brady behave as an announcer?

NFC Wild Card Playoffs - Philadelphia Eagles vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tom Brady entering the cabin after hanging up his cleats for good is a move no one saw coming. In addition to having a personality that has just come out of its shell, Brady will be removed from his family due to this new gig.

Many thought Brady would have a future ownership role, similar to how Derek Jetter bought the Miami Marlins after his playing career. Instead, Brady enters a job that is heavily watched by many.

Tom Brady can look to some of his fellow quarterbacks he’s competed with over the years for pointers. Drew Brees, Tony Romo and Peyton Manning are just three quarterbacks Brady has competed against who are now in the media.

Luckily for Brady, there isn’t a single thing he hasn’t experienced as a player. These experiences will help him as an analyst.

However, we won’t hear how Brady sounds in his new job until the start of the 2023 season at the earliest.

Brady is a hyper-competitor on the field. He thinks he will carry the same mindset and attitude with him in his new job as an analyst. If there’s anyone you shouldn’t doubt is finding their footing and excelling at their new craft, it’s Brady.

Ashton Lambie, world individual pursuit champion and world record holder, had never raced a mountain bike. Affinity Cycles had produced a number of track products, including the chainring Lambie used to set his world record, but it had never made a mountain bike.

This year Affinity made a titanium XC frame for Lambie, who raced it in the opening round of the Life Time Grand Prix at the Sea Otter Classic, his first-ever XC race.

Jason Gallacher founded Affinity Cycles as a track and courier-focused brand in New York a decade ago, and met Lambie when he was getting his start in track racing.

“His first year out, he was a sensation, and he and I hit it off, really early on,” Gallacher said. “Then he left and started doing amazing things, but we still stayed in touch.”

“He called me and said he was taking a break from track racing, which given his position on top of the world – that actually sounds very Ashton – but it was very wild” , said Gallacher. “When he asked for a mountain bike frame – he’s as much a mountain biker as Affinity is a mountain bike company – but we went. I’m the kind of person who jumps at the chance. As we are a small brand, I am able to pivot and we went from concept to sample in three months. The expectation with the Life Time Grand Prix is that it’s here to have fun and to pivot, and I’m all about it, keeping it fresh.

Lambie said he “absolutely loved the bike.”

“I’ve explored all kinds of trails around Houston and put in incredible miles. It’s comfortable on and off road, and super nimble around tight singletrack along Houston’s bayous,” he said. I have the full SRAM line, including the RockShox SID Ultimate fork, Eagle X01 groupset and Zipp 3ZeroMoto wheels.”

Check out the gallery below for a closer look and other thoughts from Lambie on the bike, which he assembled in California just before the Fuego 80K.

Lambie is racing Wild Horse Gravel this weekend on another special bike. Check back this weekend for a gallery and details on that.

BEIJING – Chinese leaders are struggling to reverse an economic slump without giving up anti-virus tactics that have shut down Shanghai and other cities, adding to challenges for President Xi Jinping as he tries to extend his term in power.

The ruling Communist Party has said its “zero COVID” goal of preventing all infections takes priority over the economy. It’s a move with global implications and comes despite warnings from experts, including the head of the World Health Organization, that the target could be out of reach.

“We don’t think it’s sustainable,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Tuesday.

China kept infection numbers low until earlier this year with a strategy that shut down cities but led to soaring costs. Beijing has moved to “dynamic cleaning” which seals off buildings or neighborhoods in the event of an infection. But with thousands of new cases of the highly infectious omicron variant reported every day, it keeps most of Shanghai’s 25 million people at home. Large parts of Beijing and other cities with tens of millions of people are also closed.

A d

This is disrupting manufacturing and hampering the global flow of goods from smartphones to iron ore, increasing inflation risks in the United States and Europe. Consumer spending is weak, dampening Chinese import demand.

The ruling party is promising tax refunds and other aid to struggling entrepreneurs Beijing relies on to create jobs and wealth. Premier Li Keqiang, No. 2, warned last week that the employment situation was “complex and grim”.

At a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Li called on officials to focus their spending and credit policies on preventing job losses, state television and the official Xinhua news agency reported. They gave no details of any new initiatives.

Despite promises of aid, forecasters say economic growth in the current quarter will drop to 1.8% a year ago from an anemic 4.8% last quarter. Growth for the full year is expected to be as low as 3.8%, below the ruling party’s official target of 5.5% and less than half of 2021’s 8.1% expansion.

“The Chinese government is willing to make sacrifices on the short-term economy to trade for long-term growth,” Nomura economist Ting Lu said. However, he said, “achieving the “zero COVID” is quite difficult, because omicron is more contagious”.

A Foreign Ministry spokesman on Wednesday called China’s approach realistic.

China’s strategy is “not to aim for zero infection but to control the epidemic situation in the shortest time and at the lowest social cost”, said Zhao Lijian. “The vast majority of people in most parts of China live and work normally.”

Complaints about food shortages and other hardships and videos posted online showing residents in Shanghai and other areas arguing with police have been deleted by censors.

Public frustration and economic losses add to complications for Xi ahead of a ruling party congress in October or November at which he is expected to try to break with tradition and give himself a third five-year term in office.

A d

Xi, China’s most dominant leader since at least the 1980s, is still expected to get another term. But experts say his rivals could have leverage to reduce his powers. Proponents of market-based economic reforms also want to roll back policies that favor state industry and tighter control of the private sector, China’s economic engine.

Quarreling over the cost of anti-virus strategies gives “openness to factional adversaries” with “deeper ties to commercial sectors,” Diana Choyleva of Enodo Economics said in a report. “They are more aware than Xi and his supporters of the impact of zero-Covid on the economy and on middle-class citizens.”

In a sign that private industry is weakening, 4.4 million businesses closed last year while only 1.3 million new businesses opened, compared to 13.8 million in 2019, according to Choyleva.

COVID restrictions have shuttered factories or suspended access to manufacturing hubs for autos, electronics and other industries, including Changchun and Jilin in the northeast and Guangzhou and Shenzhen in the south.

A d

In the central city of Zhenzhou, restaurant Xiao Nan Guo closed on May 4 but is still paying its 100 employees, according to employee Wang Huiqin. She said business was down about 40% before restaurants in the city of 13 million people were ordered to stop providing dine-in service.

“If the situation lasts a few weeks, the company can deal with it,” Wang said. “If it lasts longer, there will be problems because the costs will be too high.”

In Shanghai, most businesses have been closed since late March at an estimated cost of tens of billions of dollars per month in lost business.

Cargo volume at the port of Shanghai, the busiest in the world, is down 30%. Economists say overseas customers are looking for non-Chinese suppliers who might be more likely to deliver but charge more.

“It will further increase the risk of stagflation this year” in Western economies, said Tommy Wu of Oxford Economics, referring to a scenario of rising prices and falling economic activity.

A d

Export growth in April fell to 3.7% from a year earlier, from 15.7% in March. Imports rose 0.7%, in line with growth of less than 1% the previous month.

China was the only major economy to grow in 2020 after Beijing shut down factories, stores and offices across the country to fight the virus. The ruling party declared victory after a few months and reopened the economy.

Last year, Xi’s government reverted to long-term plans that include trying to reduce excessive property debt. This triggered a plunge in construction and home sales in mid-2021.

In a sign of the intensity of the economic pain, Beijing is facing calls from foreign companies that generally avoid questioning official policy for fear of reprisals.

The American Chamber of Commerce in China says its members want a “more optimal balance” between disease prevention and business.

More than half of the 121 companies that responded to a survey from April 29 to May 5 have delayed or reduced their investments, according to the chamber.

A d

“Members see no light at the end of the tunnel,” chamber speaker Colm Rafferty said in a statement.

At a meeting on May 5, party leaders appeared to reject those calls and the “living with the virus” stance taken by other governments.

The relaxation of virus control measures will lead to “large-scale infections, serious illnesses and deaths” and “seriously affect” the economy, they said in a statement. Closing the debate, he said “all sectors of society” should “unify their thoughts and actions” with party leaders.

Instead of abandoning their growth goal to pursue “zero-COVID”, party leaders “want both”, Larry Hu and Xinyu Ji of the Macquarie Group said in a report.

“Zero-COVID at the cost of increased unemployment is a tough sell for China’s top leaders, especially in a year of such political significance,” they wrote.

This week, the Ministry of Industry asked local governments to help contractors with rent, utilities and other expenses. He warned that “the production situation is not optimistic.”

A d

“We urgently need to take further effective measures,” a statement from the ministry said.

Alpine Dog Brewing, which left its spot next to the Ogden Theater last August, will reopen this summer in the former Denver Bicycle Cafe, bringing more craft beer to the 17th Avenue row of restaurants.

The eight-year-old brewer is renovating the space at 1308 East 17th, which was a popular cafe, beer bar and bike shop until it closed in November 2019.

“He has a great heritage,” says Alpine Dog owner Gardiner Hammond. He plans to honor that legacy by also serving coffee before brewing hours and possibly incorporating some kind of bicycle decor in the dining room.

But his biggest focus will be on the upgrades this new high-profile location will allow him to do – things he couldn’t do at Alpine Dog’s former home at 1505 Ogden Street.

The former Denver Bicycle Cafe becomes Alpine Dog Brewing.

Jonathan Shikes

For starters, it will have a decent sized patio on the side of the building. And down the road, he may also be able to open up a second patio out front. “It was something we really missed,” he says. “Like everyone else, I like to sit outside, and we have nine months of time on the patio” in Colorado.

Hammond is also selling his fifteen-barrel brewing system in order to purchase a ten-barrel system, on which he can brew a wider variety of small-batch beers, including lagers. “That means we’ll have more variety at the bar and we’ll be able to flip beers more quickly,” he says. It will also allow it to focus on increasing bar sales and less on external distribution to liquor stores or restaurants.

Still, there’s room for a canning line in case it decides to take over distribution, particularly of some of Alpine Dog’s flagship beers, like Thunder Puppy Hazy IPA and Hyper Jam Blackberry Sour.

Once the brasserie opens, he also plans to open a separate cocktail bar in the former Tandem Bar space next door. With a working name from Elsewhere, he would focus on mezcal and bourbon drinks.

And finally, Hammond says he just really loves the neighborhood, especially its collection of bars and restaurants and its always lively atmosphere. “I thought Colfax would come back, but it’s not,” he says of his former location, adding that he feels the region hasn’t gained enough momentum.

Crazy Mountain Brewing, which moved from its old space at 471 Kalamath Street last year, has plans to open in the former Alpine Dog location, but so far progress has been slow.

On the 17th, however, there could possibly be a row of miniature breweries that would include Alpine Dog; Reverence Brewing, which opened in the former Thirsty Monk space at 1604 17th in 2021; and Vine Street Pub, at 1700 17th. Vine Street closed at the start of the pandemic and has yet to reopen, but owner Kevin Daly said he still plans to bring the neighborhood favorite back.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Christie Ileto, Nydia Han and Jaclyn Lee welcome Saturday’s FYI Philly with a trip to some of Philly’s best businesses to check out during AAPI Month.

Chef Sam Chen shares the flavors of Taiwan at Bao Bun Studio

Sam Chen has been a chef for over 20 years.

His career has taken him from the kitchens where he first learned the trade to Taiwan and China to Philadelphia where he worked in popular kitchens like Sampan, Susanna Foo and Buddakan.

The chef launched his own company in March 2020, creating his Bao Bun Studio.

The company started as a ghost kitchen with takeout and delivery, offering its collection of 10 flavors of bao bun.

Some favorites include Kung Pao chicken, pork belly and Mongolian beef. The menu has expanded to include Asian-flavored chicken wings and burritos.

The Chief works in Building 39 of the Frankford Arsenal. The communal kitchen is home to 11 chefs with 11 different cooking styles.

The space is available to hire for special events with an “arsenal” of chefs available to fill the menu for your special day.

Every Friday they host a happy hour open to the public from 4-8pm with local Stickman Brews serving beer and Sam’s bao buns and other creations from the communal kitchen.

Revolution Taco turns the tables with a Mexican-Vietnamese infusion
At Revolution Taco, chef-owner Carolyn Nguyen is a classically trained chef who whips up tacos, bowls, burritos and more in her Rittenhouse Square outpost.

Homemade hot sauces, like the Ancho Curry Mango, are an example of how she likes to combine flavors from different cultures.

Chef Carolyn’s parents are both originally from Vietnam, but they met and married in the United States and started their family in Louisiana, where Carolyn grew up.

She made Philadelphia her home in 2004 and worked at restaurants like Fork, Russet, Nectar, Susanna Foo and White Dog Cafe.

She started her journey as an entrepreneur with food trucks, and now here at her own brick-and-mortar plans to expand the service to include dinner and brunch.

At Main Street Pho in Manayunk, the restaurant’s specialty is in its name.

Owner Charles Dang serves the traditional Vietnamese noodle dish in a variety of flavors from beef brisket and meatballs to shrimp and fishballs.

In Vietnam, pho is usually served for breakfast.

The origin of pho dates back to northern Vietnam in the late 1800s, its influence goes back even further. Vietnamese cuisine is often heavily influenced by Chinese and French cuisines.

Although pho is the most popular menu item, banh mi, chicken wings and bubble tea are also favorites.

The long-awaited Bun bo Hue, a spicy beef noodle soup, is now also on the menu.

Baker donates all profits to non-profits
By day, Pauline (alias PJ) Dziama works as an industrial designer. At night, she hits the kitchen for her side hustle, PJ Bakes.

Baking is her creative outlet after a long day in front of the computer.

A fan favorite is her “‘Got Rice?’ Crispies’—a cookie rolled in cereal, dusted with white chocolate and stuffed with marshmallow. And she’s always experimenting with different flavor combinations, like ube jam.

Dziama’s mother is Filipino, her paternal grandmother is Ukrainian, so many of her recipes are a Filipino/Ukrainian fusion.

She created what she calls the ideal cookie dough in the center, but the outside is super crispy.

Each week, she creates a menu of sweet and savory dishes and puts it online for sale.

PJ then donates all proceeds, giving 100% of the money to nonprofits working on issues of racism or inequality.

She started PJ Bakes because she wanted to participate in Bakers Against Racism.

Dubbed the world’s largest DIY bake sale, it was created in June 2020, inviting bakers of all skill levels, from around the world, to help raise money for the cause.

PJ answered the call.

She maintains a running list of nonprofits she has supported over the past 2 years: Black Lives Matter, Bake the Vote, Fighting COVID.

Then, when Russia invaded Ukraine, she received a message from her Ukrainian father: “Are you going to cook for us? »

So she cooked for humanitarian aid.

When she heard about a cargo plane loaded with supplies in northeast Philadelphia that needed money for fuel, she cooked for it.

Sometimes she works solo; other times, she collaborates with chefs, cafes, or others in Philadelphia’s food industry.

Now the town that seemed so foreign at the start of the pandemic has started to feel like home and PJ says, “I just don’t see any reason to stop.”

Leta’s Baking and Moon Flour Bake Shop Highlight Rise of Online Bakeries
Who needs brick and mortar? We take a look at the online bakeries born during the pandemic with two bakers building their brands on social media.

Zaneta Phean’s online bakery runs Leta’s Baking.

She specializes in personalized cakes, especially number and letter cakes, which are very trendy. The self-taught baker decorates her creations with an assortment of delicacies, fresh fruit and goodies.

Zaneta is Thai, Laotian and Cambodian and says she shares her passion and culture through baking.

It combines Asian flavors with French-inspired pastries, such as durian crumbrulee fruit tart and durian puff pastry.

Samantha Lam is the founder of an online bakery she calls Moon Flour. She is Chinese and incorporates the moon in her name, which is an important symbol in Chinese culture.

She started by selling what she calls Ube Crinkles. She also bakes a chocolate chip cookie with ube.

But a bigger hit are the chocolate chip cookies that incorporate dark sesame flavor.

Its banana pudding with flavors of ube, matcha and pandan is also a hit. It focuses on American favorites, but with an Asian twist.

Sam says she has always loved baking and with every whip she hopes to unite the community with her culturally inspired desserts.

Kayuh is the mobile bike shop that will come to you
At the Kayuh Bicycles and Cafe store in Francisville, you can grab a smoothie, coffee sandwich, and more.

While shopping for bikes, bike accessories or waiting for your bike to be repaired.
What if you don’t want to go to the store? The shop, with a van equipped with everything needed to do most repairs, will come to you.

Shop owner Henry Sam started cycling about eight years ago when he was 14. It was a great way to get around.

And because his family grew up in poverty, when the bike needed fixing, he had to fix it himself.

Sam then began buying used bikes on Craigslist, repairing them and then reselling them for a profit.

At the age of 17, Sam was working as an apprentice at Kayuh.

When the owner returned to Malaysia, Sam bought the store.

He took over just months before the pandemic. With gyms closed and people flocking to outdoor workouts, demand was exorbitant.

But Sam says people didn’t want to come into the store. So, he thought, why not start a mobile bike shop?

For Sam, raised by parents who had fled the Khmer Rouge genocide in Cambodia, his rise to entrepreneurship is a source of immense pride. At 23, he is already planning to open a second brick and mortar.

Samsara Sari gives new life to old sarees in the form of pillows, dresses, etc.
India’s exotic and colorful saris are transformed into new items by Namita Reddy, founder and designer of Samsara Sari.

The local brand is the brainchild of an Indian-born architect who wanted to find a way to keep cupboards full of saris from ending up in landfills.

Reddy receives donated saris and then reuses them using her designs for things like pillows, dresses, scrunchies, and tutu skirts for the girls.

She says it’s a way for her to “celebrate the beauty of the sari, and the beauty of India because it has such a rich culture and history”.

In Sanskrit, the word ‘samsara’ translates to ‘cycle of rebirth’ – the perfect description of Reddy’s use of the pre-loved sarees, so steeped in the traditions of Indian culture.
