NORTHVALE, NJ (CBSNewYork) – The brutal murder of a New Jersey mother has left a Bergen County town in disbelief.

Now, police say they have the woman’s colleague in custody, CBS2’s Kiran Dhillon reported Thursday.

In the quiet Northvale neighborhood, news of the death of 43-year-old Jeanette Willem reverberates throughout the community.

” It’s shocking. It really is. It’s terrible, really terrible, ”said Mimi Levine, who worked at Northvale.

Willem was found brutally murdered Wednesday morning while working for the Jamis Bikes bicycle company, located in the Ludlow Avenue industrial complex adjacent to the Rockleigh Golf Course.

The Bergen County District Attorney’s Office said she was attacked and killed with a hammer.

“It’s barbaric to take someone’s life, but brutally killing someone with a hammer is pretty hard to swallow,” said Bob Press, owner of Changing Heads Salon.

Christian Giron, 24, one of Willem’s colleagues, who lived near Harrington Park, is charged with murder.

Giron reportedly approached Willem in the morning and later admitted to stealing credit cards from him. Authorities said he then took off, changed his clothes and then called 911 himself.

A man’s son went to high school with the suspect.

“The kids are very shocked because they don’t know much about him,” said Steve Lee.

In a statement, Jamis Bikes called the death insane and tragic, adding: “Jamis Bikes is a tight-knit little group and Jeanette has been a dedicated member of our team for 20 years. We are devastated.

CBS2 spoke to Willem’s family and friends. They weren’t comfortable speaking on camera, but said she was a wonderful person and that they are heartbroken at her death.

Meanwhile, her family set up a GoFundMe page to help with funeral expenses.

People who work and live in the borough said they couldn’t believe a brutal murder happened in this tight-knit little neighborhood.

“Unexpected. This city is very, very safe. In, I can say, in the whole world, it is one of the safest places,” Lee said.

They are now sending their prayers to the Willem family.

Giron also faces additional charges, including possession of weapons and obstructing arrest.

MAKAWAO (HawaiiNewsNow) – When the pandemic first hit in March 2020, the owner of Krank Cycles – a bicycle company in Makawao – had an idea.

“We have a commercial entity that serves hotels. I decided to use this since hotels were dead to go and repair individual bikes from door to door, ”said AAron Riechert.

This is how the Maui Bike Mission was born.

“Whenever we’ve done these things, the reaction is just the joy and freedom to be on a bike, and that’s why I’m in the industry,” he said.

Over the past year and a half, Riechert has taken his bike repair team on the road.

“They were dragging broken bikes from the weeds and the riverbed,” Riechert said. “We ended up taking 17 bikes and making 13 work bikes for all these kids,” he said.

The Krank’s crew even left off the island. On Lanai, they repaired over 200 bikes in one day.

“We started at 9 am and worked until dark. We had headlamps. It was amazing, ”said Riechert.

He estimates that since the start of the Maui Bike Mission, his team has repaired around 500 bikes. And they did them all for free.

“We were just very blessed. We are fortunate to have been essential in making the repairs. Who knew bikes were that crazy thing to keep people sane, ”he said.

Since the news spread on social media, other communities in Maui have invited Krank to come to their neighborhoods.

“We want the community to invite us. We don’t want to force it and say, ‘Hey, we’re coming,’ ”said Riechert.

Her team practices COVID security measures when they go out into the field. And when they show up, they also deliver donated bikes. They distributed about 250 of them.

Krank’s next big bike mission will be in Molokai on September 25. If you live in Maui and like to donate a working bike to the Molokai community, drop it off at Krank Cycles at 1120 Makawao Ave.

Riechert has said he will continue the cycling mission for as long as he can, and he hopes his story inspires others to continue.

“Whatever skill you have, whatever your heart desires, you can take it and give it to other people,” he said.

WACO, Texas (KWTX) – A group of burglars broke into a fledgling bicycle store in East Waco and stole most of its high-end merchandise, including its mountain bikes.

Shane Howard is the owner of OTB, which stands for “Over the Bars”. He has only been in business for seven months after moving from Colorado to Waco to settle on the banks of the Brazos River.

Howard said the heist had hit him hard, but he still believed in his East Waco neighborhood.

“It will be tough because it was the last of my mountain bikes and so I don’t have any mountain bikes on the ground and as a mountain bike shop it’s frustrating,” Howard said. .

The owner of the business said that with a nationwide inventory shortage caused by the pandemic, break-ins like this are common.

However, he didn’t expect to lose all of his bikes at once.

“I cannot replace the bikes with the inventory shortage. It’s not like the insurance company can empty me a check and I can immediately replace these bikes. It will probably take six to eight months, at least, before we see bikes like this again, ”Howard said.

The burglars took away a total of four bikes, some valued at over $ 4,000.

Among the stolen mountain bikes were a Kona Process 153, Kona Process 134, Kona Hei Hei, and Jamis Durango Hard Tail.

The burglary, captured by a surveillance camera, was committed in less than a minute.

“The police are investigating. They have good fingerprints and security camera footage so hopefully they’ll catch them quickly, ”Howard said.

Even after the burglary, Howard still loves this area of East Waco and has no hesitation in moving here, although he plans to make improvements to his security system.

“I really don’t believe those thieves were from this neighborhood. They really knew what they were doing and obviously they had done it before and knew what they were looking for. I have no problem with this area and plan to be here for as long as I can stay open, ”Howard added.

If you know anything about this crime, call the Waco Police.

Since the 1970s, bikes ranging from turquoise beach cruisers to bright yellow tricycles have lined the front of a long, blue-gray building on the Coast Road just north of Lewes.

When customers enter Shaffer’s service, they are greeted by an old black-and-white “Schwinn” sign above the counter and other bikes strewn about awaiting a sale or repair.

But while locals and visitors alike know the family business for its high standard of service and quality products, that’s not what most people will tell you about the store.

Rob Welsh, pastor at The Odyssey Church in Selbyville and friend of the Shaffer family, put it so.

“This store had more love than there were bikes,” he said. “And there were a lot of bikes.”

Many people will say that they felt like part of a family – even though they only spent a few minutes in the store – and that, they say, it was because of Cindy Shaffer.

Cindy Shaffer was a perfectionist when it came to bicycle repair. She ran the Shaffer's Service bicycle store for over two decades.

Shaffer owned the store for over 40 years, but to a lot of people she was so much more.

Friends of her sons Matthew and Nathan remember Cindy Shaffer as a second mother. She would take the kids to Little League games or McDonald’s in her blue Mystery Machine-like van, she planned trips to theme parks and beaches, and she was always there with a big hug, or maybe- be a few hard-to-hear words if she thought you needed them.

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Brothers Don, 68, and Chris Johnson, 71, own the Austintown Glenwood Cycle Shop. On Saturday, they will retire, and at the same time, close their store after 67 years of activity.

Tuesday afternoon at the store, John Check was picking up a bike and Patti Kostelnac was shopping for accessories. They also learned of the store’s closure on Tuesday.

“It’s sad, I don’t know where I’m going to go now. I’ve always been here so I’m going to have to find a new place, ”Check said.

“Sad, or more than sad. We’re a whole bunch that come here from the Steel Valley Triathlon Club and we’ve been coming here for years and years, and yes we hate to see them go, ”said Kostelnac.

“It’s just time. It’s time. We have health issues that we have to deal with, ”Don said.

Don and Chris have spent their entire lives with the company. Their parents, Chuck and Terry Johnson, opened in 1954 as the Glenwood Bicycle Shop on Glenwood Avenue in Youngstown.

“We kind of grew up in the bike shop there. Mom took care of us. Dad worked part time at a Ford garage and mom kept the store open until he showed up after work and then came to the store, ”Chris said.

In 1982 they moved to Fitch Boulevard behind Austintown Plaza and renamed it Austintown Glenwood Cycle.

“I moved to the suburbs where there were more people, more business,” Don said.

In addition to bikes, they also sold golf carts and utility vehicles made by Cushman and Club Car.

“The Cushman line that we were using to maintain the General Motors plant over there with the vehicles they were driving there,” Chris said.

In the showroom on Tuesday, there were only eight bikes for sale as the pandemic created a shortage of parts and a shortage of bikes.

The brothers know it’s time to step back and shut down, but they still say it’s sad.

“Sad to see people and not to see people. All of our clients were more family to us than just clients, ”said Don.

Saturday is the last day and people are invited to stop and say goodbye.

The brothers owned the building but sold it to neighboring Superior Auto Body, which will now take it over.

Two wanted and hard to find bikes were stolen in a morning raid.

Owner Scott Brown said he was awakened by a call from the security company saying there had been a break-in to the store.

“They forced open a very heavy sliding door that is only accessible from the inside and took the van from the store and slammed it through the glass front doors.

“They then opened the doors and collected as much as they could under what was a wreckage of broken glass and aluminum,” he said.

Brown said they were very curious how the van got started as the keys were locked in a draw.

Among the loot that was taken were two Cervélo carbon gravel bikes.

Brown said they are worth around $ 25,000 each.

It also appears that thieves have stolen up to 1,000 designer items of clothing.

“In some ways it looks like an order to get what they needed and in other ways it is like why would they take it?”

Bikes have an electrical component, which means they need a charger.

“There is no charger on it, so it’s going to be a little pointless.

“These bikes are very exclusive, they are very difficult to obtain right now, especially because of the way the world is with the pandemic.”

Brown said they are preparing to relocate the store in the next few months so they don’t have CCTV cameras in place.

“It happened at a pretty crappy time, we didn’t really need that.”

But the store’s van was captured by police CCTV passing through the city center after the incident, he said.

“The police did an incredible job this morning. They were absolutely wonderful.”

Brown said the incident was not really a big deal for him.

“No one is hurt but it’s just a inconvenience for the guys who work for me and do a great job every day.”
