For around £ 1,000 you can expect bikes built with aluminum frames, carbon fiber forks and mostly Shimano groupsets, with the more common 105, Tiagra and Sora. You could get a carbon fiber frame at this price, but that usually means the components will be downgraded to account for the more expensive frame. Essentially, you will get better parts on an aluminum frame because the cost of an aluminum frame is much less than a carbon frame. Trek has brought the latest versions of Domane aluminum endurance bikes to the border between pure road bikes and gravel bikes. Like its stable mates, the Domane AL 3 Disc has clearance for large tires (32mm are fitted as standard) and mudguards, and multiple brackets for bottle cages, racks and even a snack box with top tube.

Specialized made the Allez a slightly smoother bike in 2018, changing it from the previous jaw-dropping racing bike into something more suited for long rides. It’s still fast, but its previous sharp handling has been calmed down, and the new version even has grommets for the fenders and support in recognition of Go’s status as a popular fast commuter for Cycle program buyers.
